Retail Building RT-4
Location: London, UK Status: Completed 2001

RT-4 is the centrepiece of Canary Wharf's Churchill Place. Serving as a gateway at the easternmost end of the district, the semicircular pavilion rises above a landscaped buffer and organizes vehicular traffic to and from the area.

At once embedded in its site and opening out and down to the waterfront promenade, the structure reaches out to the surrounding buildings through radiating Promenade Level passages and offers a grand setting for public use, supported by the amenity of dining and convenience retail use.

The slender bronzed steel supporting columns and long span open trusses are integral to the glazed enclosure, evoking the lightness of 19th century rail terminals and conservatories realized in a contemporary architectural expression.
